Named after Helerius, the hermit who once lived on the grounds where Elizabeth Castle now stands and reportedly martyred there in 555, St Helier started as a small fishing village. It was not until the 19^th century that St Helier became a major town with its harbours extended to serve as a commercial port. St Helier is home to more than 33,000 people, about one-third of the total population of Jersey. The capital is the focus of island transport, commerce, and cultural activity.
